Poetry - Fibonacci Poems

Fibonacci poems are constructed around the Fibonacci number sequence. Sixteenth-century mathematician Fibonacci developed the number sequence based on the sum of the two preceding numbers. This mathematical sequence underpins the Golden Ratio, represented in nature and man-made structures, from sunflower seeds and snail shells to art, music and poetic forms and structures, and, contemporarily, in web page design and AI algorithms.

It is regarded that these ratios produce a perfect symmetry of form and design.

The two Fibonacci poems presented, Time Fix and Waiting for the Sun, rely on various uses of the Fibonacci sequence.

Time Fix was published in the Fibonacci Quarterly by Musepie Press in October 2014. Each line follows the Fibonacci sequence by syllable. The second voice enters at line 4 and is highlighted in  purple . It follows a second Fibonacci sequence but is part of the syllable count per line, so it can be performed as a canon. The second voice continues to hold the lyric as a solo from line 10. The song text/poem is 13 lines long.

Waiting for the Sun is 13 lines long and is structured with each line having 3, 5 or 8 accents in terms of the musical score. The accents are highlighted in bold. The accents add up to the Fibonacci number 55.

Time Fix

Quick
Time
Chasing
Each second
Another chance
 bet
The dancer enters panting
 fast
Distracted by the beats, she swirls to cover
 her past
Fate chimes, Entropy, old church walls, crumbling, where is the prayer
 once held there
 The wheel still spinning
The runner his heart still missing
Sweaty palms his life blood pumping, mortal vein infarct
Fate chimes, Entropy, gone is the passion, blind allusion, there is no revolution

Waiting for the Sun

Still Quiet, Snow drifts, Endless
The Hearth, a child plays, restless
She Paces
Watching the Jammed Door
Of winter
Fire bright, twilight sifting
The chair she rocks, time keeping,
Dozey potion
That mocks the grey-witted hour
Ice-Palace Dream
She sings the night Invisible
To give it form and light
Waiting for the Sun.
